The network is a combination of five businesses including a news website, a broadcast television network, a podcast network, streaming platforms, and events. It is also available for free on the company's app. TheGrio, originally launched in June 2009 as a division of NBC News, became a division of MSNBC in 2013. It was founded by the team who created the documentary film Meeting David Wilson. In 2014, it was sold to its founders.
